The Underdog Movie…

I should start by congratulating Leicester City for winning the Premier League, though I was kind of rooting for Tottenham to slay the “loud mouthed” blues. Yeah, you may have guessed, that I’ve got no lost love for Chelsea. They’re a tad too arrogant for my liking, guess they get that from a former coach (wonder how he feels watching the former Champions slide to 10th position on the table)… vindicated perhaps? Anyways, it’s quite a tale the way Leicester came from nowhere and trounced all the supposedly big weights. I’ve always loved a good “underdog story”. And that of Leicester City is a great example. Enjoy your reign guys… while it lasts. Lol.

Speaking of underdogs, got one series that fits into the mold, Marvel’s Daredevil or simply Daredevil. You know the story about the blind lawyer that turns vigilante at night to protect his city. All these super heroes, always trying to protect their city, guess that’s why we don’t have any in Naija, because Nigerians don’t exactly care about their cities… right?

So, Daredevil is an American web television series created for Netflix by Drew Goddard, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is the first in a series of shows that will lead up to a Defenders crossover miniseries.

Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a blind lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night. Daredevil entered development in late 2013, a year after the film rights to the character reverted to Marvel. It also stars Deborah Ann WollElden HensonRosario Dawson, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Additional season one stars include Toby Leonard MooreVondie Curtis-HallBob Gunton, andAyelet Zurer, while Jon BernthalÉlodie Yung, and Stephen Rider join the cast for season two. Filming takes place in New York City, in areas that still look like the old Hell’s Kitchen.

All episodes of the first season were released on April 10, 2015, with critics praising the action sequences, performances, and the darker tone compared to other properties set in the MCU. On April 21, 2015, Marvel and Netflix renewed Daredevil for a second season, which was released in its entirety on March 18, 2016.

The first season sees Murdock/Daredevil use his heightened senses from being blinded as a young boy to fight crime at night on the streets of his neighborhood as Daredevil. In the second season, Murdock continues to balance life as a lawyer and Daredevil, while crossing paths with Frank Castle / Punisher, a vigilante with far deadlier methods as well as the return of his old girlfriend – Elektra Natchios.

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 98% approval rating, based on 51 reviews, with an average rating of 8/10. The website’s critical consensus reads, “With tight adherence to its source material’s history, high production quality, and a no-nonsense dramatic flair, Daredevil excels as an effective superhero origin story, a gritty procedural, and an exciting action adventure. The second season saw a drop in approval rating to 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. With the site’s consensus being “Bolstered by some impressive action, Daredevil keeps its footing in season two, even if the additions of Punisher and Elektra can’t quite fill the void left by Wilson Fisk. In December 2015, IGN named Daredevil the second best Netflix original programming series released to date.

I kind of agree that Fisk’s villain in Season one was stronger compared the combo of both Punisher and Elektra in Season two. But, I thought Elektra’s character heightened the tensions and stood out in comparison to Punisher’s, which I considered bland and uninteresting and thought the producers should have spiced him up more (especially if they want to launch a Punisher series with him in lead). And the plot also wasn’t as tight as Season one.

But all the same, Netflix Daredevil (both seasons) make a great watch. Especially if you love well-choreographed fight scenes. The stunt man for Murdock/Daredevil is simply off the hook. It’s my believe that he should get an award for his work on Daredevil. He’s that good! And Cox doesn’t do badly either. His take was definitely better than Ben Affleck’s in the Daredevil movie of 2003. And whether or not a blind person can do what the blind Murdock/Daredevil does (heightened senses or not) is a discussion best left alone *smile*.

So, check it out guys and give us a heads up on what you think. Do have an awesome week. Bye. Bye!
