Merry Christmas everyone! It feels kind of odd celebrating Christmas on a Friday right? But hey I heard the holiday has been extended till Monday, so more time for grooving. Want to know where moi is hanging out this season (shss… it’s a secret)…lol. Just kidding. Gonna hang with my hubby and some friends, maybe attend an all-white party, do some karaoke or go catch a movie. Speaking of which, I’ve got one for us to watch on Christmas day, which is why we’re having this review Thursday instead of Friday night. We’re never too busy to watch a movie? We live for the movies, remember. On to the movie then. It’s another franchise and a Sci fi… ready? It’s the Terminator Genisys.
Terminator Genisys is the fifth release of “The Terminator” franchise, a science fiction American movie created by James Cameron starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The central of the story being the battle of survival between the human race and Skynet, a global digital defense network which becomes self-aware and decides to wipe of the human race. Food for thought for yah canvassing for artificial intelligence. Arnold plays the T800 terminator model, a machine sent to kill the human, Sarah Connor who will give birth to the saviour of the human race, John Connor.
Schwarzenegger: Now and then
Still remember Arnold’s famous line from the first terminator “I’ll be back”. Terminator 1 was awesome and many still consider it to be best of all the series. But I think I prefer Judgment Day mainly because of the T1000 terminator played by Robert Patrick.
The Terminator franchise comprises of The Terminator (1984), Judgment Day (1991), Rise of the Machines (2003) and Salvation (2009).
In Terminator Genisys, John Connor (Jason Clarke) leader of the human resistance sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future… did you know Emilia Clarke is Daenerys Targaryen from Game of thrones? Yes she is!
An unexpected turn of events however creates a fractured timeline and the timeline changes when an aged Schwarzenegger T-800 is sent to protect Sarah Connor from an earlier attempt on her life when she was twelve years old and has been watching over her since. John Connor also travels back to meet up with his parents (Sarah and Reese) but isn’t quite himself after been transformed to a bizarre terminator human hybrid. So Judgment Day is postponed to an unspecified day on October 2017 and it’s up to Sarah, Reese and Arnold’s terminator stop it. Sounds confusing doesn’t it? Well join the club. I had to watch the movie twice before I had some idea of what it was about and I’m pretty sure I have to watch it a couple more times before I really get the hang of it.
The latest of the franchise, Terminator Genisys, directed by Alan Taylor and written by Leata Kalogridis is viewed as a domestic failure in the States after ending its run with just $89.5m (not good). However it crossed over $320 million overseas for a $409 million worldwide total, becoming the first American film to cross $400 million worldwide absent a $100 million + domestic cume.
The writer/director of the first two terminators had this to say ‘I feel the franchise has been reinvigorated. High praise indeed considering Cameron has distanced himself from the franchise after his classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day, saying they didn’t live up to the previous movies. Critics had this to say “it’s a fussed over, over glossed and self-referential screenplay”. Don’t ask me what that last part means. Don’t know either. Other words used to describe the movie include; scattered, changing, and unwieldy. Schwarzenegger himself also joined the hub of critics with nothing positive to say when quoted to have said ‘it sucked’. I think you’re a bad team player Arnold for criticizing your movie so vehemently. Can’t spit in the same pool you drink from right? Besides you could have turned down the script. Not like anyone forced you to act in it.
OK maybe the storyline wasn’t so great and kind of confusing…. so keep watching till you understand it… lol. What have I always said about the original and sequels, people? Sequels rarely live up th.e original and some fail at it more badly than others (lips sealed). But enough badmouthing and get on the wagon. Everyone loves a Terminator movie! Terminators are kind of cool. My favourite would be the T1000, liquid metal shape shifting…. something? The way it morphs from solid to liquid and vice versa and can take on any shape is pretty cool. And the movie does have some great effects like when the bus somersaults on the bridge and goes over the barrier, when Sarah and Reese appear in the middle of the freeway in 2017….wonder why they have to go through the time machine naked…uh? Not to mention action packed from the beginning to the end. it’s got enough perks to overlook a somewhat convoluted script. And what’s more we have a Nigerian actor in the movie, Dayo Okeniyi. Yay! That’s good enough for me!
So it’s Terminator Genisys for the weekend people and I do hope you have fun watching. Merry Christmas once again from Jollyhood Pictures. Party safe guys, remember 2016 is just around corner. Bye
