Hi. I’m feeling kind of bored lately with the box that has moving people in it, since most of my favourite series are off air on production break, so I thought I would start something… *tongue in cheek*
Crazy inscription right? Ever since I saw it, I haven’t stopped pondering on how people come up with such things. Well, I’ve got no comment. Apart from to say Jon Snow looks pretty good, these fine lips are sealed (zipping it up tight right now). Perhaps female GOT fans might want to let me on on which category they pick… hmm?
Think I’m done with the starting trouble stuff, and ready to move on to the thing we love the most. HBO got a new series on the block called Westworld and if you know anything about the studio, it’s that they’ve got this knack for churning out some interesting stuff. From “The Sopranos” to ”True Detective“ to “GOT”, HBO series thrives on intrigue, suspense, complex super characterization, brilliant acting thrown in with big production budgets. As well as violent, twisted, sadistic and insane plots with high lewd content. And Westworld aint no different.
The series is an American science fiction western thriller television series created by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest. Another favourite of mine. See post ”Person of Interest“) and Lisa Joy for HBO. It’s based on the 1973 film of the same name, which was written and directed by American novelist Michael Crichton of Jurassic World (a brilliant novelist), and to a lesser extent on the 1976 sequel Futureworld. It is the second TV series based on the two films, the first being the short-lived 1980 series Beyond Westworld.
The fictional Westworld is a technologically advanced, Wild West-themed amusement park but unlike the usual amusement parks, this one’s populated by human androids called “hosts”. Visitors called “guests”, may indulge their inner, basic fantasies within the park, without fear of retaliation from the hosts for a steep price. The series stars some impressive acts like Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris and James Marsden, amongst others.
The first season premiered on October 2, 2016, concluded on December 4, 2016, and consists of ten episodes. Westworld’s debut on HBO got the network it’s highest viewership ratings for a premiere since the first episode of True Detective in 2014 and it ranks as the most-watched first season of an HBO original series ever. In November 2016, HBO renewed the show for a 10-episode second season, and planned for a 2018 debut.
The series has been praised by critics for the visuals, story, and acting. On the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, the review reads “With an impressive level of quality that honors its source material, the brilliantly addictive Westworld balances intelligent, enthralling drama against outright insanity.” On Metacritic, the first season has a score of 74 out of 100 based on 43 reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.
The editors of TV Guide placed Westworld fifth among the top ten picks for the most anticipated new shows of the 2016–17 season. Nominated for 3 Golden Globe Awards, 2 Satellite Awards, 4 Critics’ Choice Television Awards and 2 Writers Guild of America Awards and having won 2 IGN People’s Choice Awards, 1 Satellite Award and 3 Critics Choice Television Awards, one of which being Most Exciting New Series Award, it’s clear that Westworld is a must watch for 2017… that’s overlooking the other things I mentioned.
